The above picture features three naked women, with a label under each which notes the man and woman’s perception of “the ideal”, and the third, the average weight from (I am assuming, North America). The picture is supposed to show that although women desire to be a “size 8”, men prefer women to be a “size 12”, yet the national average size is 16. To me, the picture suggests the following type of caption: “don’t worry so much about your size ladies, men prefer you to be 4 sizes up than what your ego ideal wants anyway”! In other words, I view the picture to be problematic, because it is suggesting that a woman’s body, be formed according to male perception. The picture should not include the “man’s ideal”, because it does not matter. The woman’s image of “perfection” should not be formed upon the male’s perception.

In general, participants said they were happiest with their naked bodies at age 34. And while women in their 30s may be more wise about media messages concerning unrealistic beauty standards, research suggests that the average woman still has about 13 negative thoughts about her body every day.
