More than 3.6 million people shared Brumfitt’s before and after photos on Facebook.
I captioned it: “Here is my non-traditional before and after photo…”
In 14 days, my life had totally changed. Thanks to a couple of pictures on Facebook, I was becoming the new face of “before and after pictures” and a spokesperson for body acceptance. I was thrilled to take on the role. But I grew frustrated with the four-minute interviews. I had so much more to say. I needed a bigger platform. One day, I thought, I’ll make a documentary. As a high school dropout working as a photographer, I never thought I’d be a director.
Nude before-and-after photos are all over the internet, promoting positivity and letting people know that virtuality isn’t what it looks like. Social media allows us to create the identity we want in a virtual world and make an impact on followers. But on the other side, we’re also followers of other accounts.
Some of these profiles prefer to be kept secret and post poetry or other types of meaningful content. Others can be that you end up wondering how God makes them so perfect. Other accounts post before and after photos that inspire each of us. So, scrolling through Instagram photos can get pretty depressing or inspiring. The key to get inspired instead of depressed is to not compare your body to perfect models.
