Sometimes it can be really fun to be naked. Maybe you’re a nudist. Maybe you just have a really hot body and it’s annoying not to be able to show it off outside of Snap Chat. But there’s good news! It is becoming ever possible to expose yourself, without defying norms and values (or inciting local law enforcement). Now, with the help of some friendly celebrities, we bring you a guide to being naked while wearing clothes.
Body on body: the indiscreet charm of the naked dress
It’s been my stringent belief that self-confidence is the sexiest of attributes and, well, here you have it. Enviable assuredness. An outfit, combined with an attitude, that says, ‘I Feel F**king Fabulous’ (and truly, if you don’t want to feel like this these days, you are lying my friend). Though, as anyone with a social media account will attest to, for every ounce of high praise, a hate-follow lies not-so-distantly in its wake. ‘I don’t understand why they go practically naked,’ one Instagram user commented underneath Kravitz’ picture (which has since been deleted). ‘She’s gorgeous. Why does she feel the need to wear a dress like this?,’ said another. Kravitz’ response? ‘Being uncomfortable with the human body is colonization / brainwashing. It’s just a body. We all got em.’
It gave the illusion of nakedness whilst being fully dressed. And, lest we forget, Carrie Bradshaw’s flesh-toned, micro-mini slip dress worn in the first series of Sex and the City on a date with Mr Big. Which, pre-public outing, drew a spectrum of reaction from the friendship boardroom, including Miranda’s quip that, ‘she’s not going to have sex…she’s just going to look like sex.’ As with our naked dreams, the naked dress yo-yos in our perception between between alluring illusion and eye-popping vulgarity. And this is because it holds up a mirror to our innermost relationship with the unclothed body.
But barely-there dresses aren’t just for celebrities attending industry events. In the month of June alone, Lyst reported a 45% increase in searches for “naked dresses” and “see-through dresses,” while “mini sheer dresses” and “cut-out dresses” saw page views increase by 21% and 38%, respectively. Leading the charge are brands like Mirror Palais, Poster Girl, and Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS, all of which have body-mirroring .
