So-called “deepfake porn” is becoming increasingly common, with deepfake creators for porn featuring a person of the buyer’s choice and a plethora of fake not-safe-for-work videos floating around sites dedicated to deepfakes.
“The rise of AI porn adds another layer of complexity to this, where new technologies like Stable Diffusion create fake porn images,” says Maddocks. “These synthetic sexual images are AI-generated, in that they are not depicting real events, but they are trained on images of real people, many of which are shared non-consensually. In online spaces, it is difficult to disentangle consensually from non-consensually distributed images.”
Fake porn causes real harm to women
Deepfakes such as the ones targeting Taylor Swift are often used to attack women. Tech giants, regulators and lawmakers must take up the fight against fake porn.
Making realistic deepfakes requires many images of the target, which is why celebrities are especially vulnerable. The better A.I. gets, though, the wider its net will spread. After the investigative reporter Rana Ayyub criticized India’s governing political party for supporting those accused of raping and murdering a Kashmiri child in 2018, a fake porn video of Ayyub started circulating online and fed into an intimidation campaign so fierce that the United Nations stepped in. “From the day the video was published,” Ayyub reflected later that year, “I have not been the same person.”
