Carmina Burana is the musical setting for a medieval Latin text, and it does sometimes have a Gregorian chant feel, but it is actually a fairly sexual piece of poetry. The dancers started with ‘nude’ body stocking. The work was circular in that it ended in the same costumes, but after some overtly sexual simulations. The circular feeling of the work was emphasised by the backdrop which was the famous drawing The Wheel of Fortune which was on the original manuscript. The choreography itself is unexciting but the dancing was lovely.
One answer, if this evening was any indication, is art. The whirling social strata of Carmina Burana were insensate to the action of the naked shades around them, the revolutions of the wheel. But they took their places in their world and embodied them with surprising joy in dance. And Agon felt like art for art’s sake. Dance set to a boundary-pushing score, which became a boundary-pushing ballet that is still engaging today. This program could have been stuffy. But something about both pieces—and maybe about both pieces on the program together—made me like the world a little more. The high-spirited, whooping audience didn’t hurt. These pieces found pleasure in the existential, instead of bleakness. And, in these times, I’m grateful.

Some years ago I attended a performance by the Birmingham Ballet of Carmina Burana with the Symphony Choir of Johannesburg conducted by Richard Cock. It was a mind blowing experience so I was really looking forward to hearing the popular music of Carl Orff being the impetus for the dancing of the Imperial Russian Ballet as part of their 2012 South African tour.
